H.W. Wilson Publishes Immigration in the United States

New Reference Shelf Volume Examines Issues at the Heart of the Immigration Debate

New York, New York, August 18, 2009
The H.W. Wilson Company today announced Immigration in the United States, a new work in the popular Reference Shelf book series. Immigration in the United States looks at the history of immigration to the U.S., examines issues at the heart of the immigration debate, and forecasts how immigration might affect America's social, political, and demographic future.

The first section, "The Golden Door: Immigration at the Dawn of the 20th Century," looks at immigration to the U.S. from the 1840s to the 1920s: what inspired that wave, the lives the immigrants lived, and the reactions of native-born Americans and the federal government. Section two, "An Era of Uncertainty: Immigration from 1965 to Today," covers the second great wave, including the shift from Europe to Latin America as the main source of newcomers. Articles in the third section, "Stirring the Melting Pot: Social and Cultural Change," examines the influence of immigrants on American politics, finance, and culture. Next, "The Challenge of Assimilation" explores the obstacles faced by early immigrants as compared to challenges today, with a special focus on the assimilation of Latin-American immigrants. Section five, "Building a Fence: Security and Fear on the Border," examines the controversies surrounding illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border. Section six, "Opinions on Immigration--Legal and Illegal," looks at the public perception of Latin-American immigrants and how the government should handle today's immigration wave. The final section, "Federal Policy and the Future of Immigration," discusses government policies that have encouraged legal and illegal immigration, and what's being done to reform U.S. immigration policy.

Immigration in the United States is the fourth title of six to be released in The Reference Shelf 2009 (Volume 81). Each book in the Reference Shelf series offers extensive exploration of a topic of importance in modern society, in a compilation of notable articles from respected publications, abstracts of 20 to 30 additional articles, and a bibliography of other sources.
