H.W. Wilson Publishes The News and Its Future

New York, New York, April 22, 2010
The H.W. Wilson Company today announced The News and Its Future, a new work in the popular Reference Shelf book series. The News and Its Future looks at modern journalism and how new media is transforming it, with an emphasis on the promise, the perils, and how it all impacts the ideals and standing of the "Fourth Estate."

Section one, “The Democratization of the News: The Internet and the Rise of Citizen Journalism,” looks at the increasingly blurred boundary between professional journalism and the reporting and commentary published by ordinary citizens on the Web, and how this “democratization” is affecting the news industry. Section two, “The Newspaper Crisis: Print Media in the Crosshairs,” considers the recent fortunes of the newspaper industry and whether there’s hope for its future in the face of the Internet tidal wave of competing news sources. Section three, “Media Bias: The Politics of Journalism” asks whether the news media has a political agenda and what impact the perception of media bias has on how the public informs itself. The final section, “The 24-Hour News Cycle: The Cable News Effect” looks at how round-the-clock coverage of news and real-time reporting have changed how stories are presented and consumed.

The News and Its Future is the second title of six to be released in The Reference Shelf 2010 (Volume 82). Each book in the Reference Shelf series offers extensive exploration of a topic of importance in modern society, in a compilation of notable articles from respected publications, abstracts of 20 to 30 additional articles, and a bibliography of other sources. Volume 82 includes Robotics (February), The News and Its Future (April), U.S. National Debate Topic 2010-2011: The American Military Presence Overseas (June), Russia (August), Graphic Novels and Comic Books (October), and Representative American Speeches 2009-2010 (December).
