Sears List of Subject Headings

The Sears List of Subject Headings, the standard thesaurus of subject terminology for small and medium sized libraries since 1923, is available as an electronic database on WilsonWeb. As with the original print Sears List, the new electronic version provides a list of essential headings, together with patterns and examples to guide the cataloger in creating additional headings as needed.

The database includes all the material in the 20th edition of the Sears List, plus all headings added since the publication of that edition. New headings are added on a regular basis.

The new interface on WilsonWeb provides the most sophisticated and user-friendly access to the thesaurus possible, making it ideal for both catalogers and their technical services staff. Search results, both brief and full display, are ranked according to relevance and include all the following elements:

  • Subject headings

  • Use For terms (See references)

  • Broader terms

  • Related terms

  • Narrower terms

  • Scope notes

  • DDC Numbers associated with a heading

  • General references explaining the use of subdivsions and the provisions for creating new headings according to established patterns

  • Links to MARC Display
