Current Biography Excerpts: Diving
LOUGANIS, GREG
(loo-GAYN-uhs)
1960(?)- Diver.
Even before the 1984 Olympic Games, at which he became the
first man in fifty-six years to capture the gold medals in both the springboard and
platform diving competitions, Greg Louganis was considered by his fellow divers to be
about as close to perfection as it is possible to be. Since taking the silver medal in the
platform event at the 1976 Olympics, he has so dominated his sport, particularly on the
springboard, that he has been virtually without rivals. The only diver ever to score
straight perfect tens in an international competition, Louganis owns three World and four
Pan American championships, and he recently won his twenty-ninth national crown, setting a
record for most national diving titles.
